The general goal of civilisation is to make the deepest pleasures of Life sustainable. Practically, what this means is reducing the stakes of competition. In the most basic example, such as courtship, chastity and monogamy ensure that there is no moment in which someone feels deep sexual jealousy. If everyone must wait until marriage, and marriage is a lifelong commitment, then there is no situation in which a man has sex with a woman and then she is stolen. This prevents violent physical conflicts between men. The great problem of civilization is that it destroys the warrior mindset. A warrior does not need sustainable pleasures, because he may die at any moment. Therefore, it does not make logical sense from his own perspective to live this way. He may, and some do, due to social pressure. But the native mindset of a warrior is to take what is in front of him, I.e. raping and pillaging in victory. This dilemma would seem to verify the idea that a good civilisation has a particular warrior class, which abides by different rules than the rest of society. If this is not the case, the society will either lose its warrior nature or descend into chaos as the warriors conquer all.
